Here at Silver Tree Primary School, we aim to deliver a high-quality physical education curriculum that inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically demanding activities. Pupils at Silver Tree Primary School participate in twice weekly high-quality PE and sporting activities. Our PE programme incorporates a variety of sports to ensure all children develop the confidence, tolerance and the appreciation of their own and others’ strengths and weaknesses. Each year group is expected to cover Dance, Gymnastics, Games (invasion games, net and wall, striking and fielding games), Athletics, Outdoor Adventure Activities and Swimming (in allocated years).
We work alongside the Durham and Chester le Street School Sports Partnership and Craig’s Coaching to ensure a high-quality delivery of PE and upskilling of our staff. As part of our partnership, we have access to many different events throughout the year that all children from Early Years to Year 6 can attend. These events have included: gymnastics carousels, cricket and tennis festivals, football league competitions, all delivered at other sites, as well as fun runs and taster sessions delivered at our school.
We provide opportunities for all children to engage in extra-curricular activities before, during and after school, in addition to competitive sporting events. This is an inclusive approach which endeavours to encourage not only physical development but also well-being.
Intent of PE
It is our intent at Silver Tree Primary School and Nursery to teach children life skills that will positively impact on their future. We aim to deliver high-quality teaching and learning opportunities that inspire all children to succeed in physical activities. We want to teach children how to co-operate and collaborate with others, as part of a team, understanding fairness and equity of play to embed life-long values.
We recognise the value of physical education, and we fully adhere to the aims of the national curriculum for physical education to ensure that all children:
- develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities;
- are able to remain physically active for sustained periods of time and have an understanding of the importance of this in promoting long-term health and well-being;
- engage in competitive sports and activities;
- lead healthy, active lives;
- can swim at least 25 metres before the end of Year 6 and know how to remain safe in and around water;
- have the opportunity to take part and experience a wide range of sports and physical activity.
