Year 6 Archived Activities 2019-2020

Welcome to Year 6

We are a hardworking, vibrant and enthusiastic Year 6 class. Our class teacher is Mrs Peverall and we work with Mrs Kidd to develop our writing skills. We are supported in class by Miss Hall.

Our Curriculum and Learning

The children will focus on a different topic each half term. This topic will link together a range of subjects with a common theme. We will begin each topic with a ‘hook’ lesson to trigger our imaginations and leave us wanting to learn more! Topic work allows the children to gain a deeper understanding of the focus theme and produce a wider range of work linked to the area which they are learning about.

English

Our English work is always based on a class novel. We share this novel during shared reading and comprehension lessons over the course of a half term. Our writing tasks link to our novels and we complete a range of writing genre in our lessons. Our reading lessons focus on developing our reading and comprehension skills and link to our novel, film clips and images.

Our Topic Work

Autumn Term

It’s Electric

We begin the year exploring our topic ‘It’s Electric’. This topic allows the children to learn more about the theme of Electricity in Science alongside other subjects. We will be reading a novel linked to the theme of Electricity and using this to inspire our writing. Our Design and Technology work will link to our main theme as we design and produce our own products.

Shine Bright!

Our topic this half term is called Shine Bright. During this topic we will learn about light in Science. We will explore World War Two and the impact on our local environment. We will find out about local war heroes and how the war changed the lives of people who lived in our area.

Spring Term

The Circle of Life

Our first topic of the Spring Term is named ‘The Circle of Life’. This topic will focus on living things and their habitats in Science. The children will explore different climate zones, biomes and vegetation areas in Geography to inform their design criteria in our Design and Technology work.

This is me!

Our next topic for the spring term is called ‘This is me!’ This topic will help the children to learn more about their bodies with a focus on the circulatory system. The children will also learn about what makes a healthy lifestyle and how the choices we make can change of physical and mental health. Our art work will focus on self-portraits and the children will study some artists throughout time who have drawn portraits. Our History work focuses on the developments of medicine overtime.

Maths

Over the course of the year, we will be developing the key skills of fluency, reasoning and problem solving. We will extend our understanding of place value, the four main operations of number, shape, space and measure. Our learning will be divided in to blocks to allow the children to gain a secure understanding of the skills and enjoy the different challenges which each theme in Maths will offer.

Homework

We begin Year 6 with a project based homework. The children are given a grid with various activities to complete worth a different amount of merits. The children are given the opportunity to share their homework with the class on a weekly basis. Our grids link directly to the topic which we are learning about in class.

  • Year 6 Homework letter – Autumn term to Summer term

The children are given weekly spellings and times tables to learn for a test. It is also expected that the children read to an adult at home at least three times per week.

Class Newsletters

Our class newsletters are sent home every half term. They explain what the children will be learning about in the different lessons and share any upcoming events.
