Homework
Homework is an important part of Year 6 as it not only supports pupils with vital revision time for the SATs, but also prepares them for the expectations of Secondary School.
Homework in Year 6 is designed to support ongoing learning in school and as such will either reflect topics currently being taught, or will test prior knowledge from Year 5 ahead of a topic being taught in class.
The goal is quality over quantity, so pupils will be given an appropriate amount of good quality work to complete each week.
Homework books are handed out on Thursday afternoon with a hand-in deadline of Monday morning. A homework club runs every Friday lunchtime in the Year 6 classroom for pupils to get a head start on their work or to ask any questions.
Pupils are also given daily Maths and English challenges to complete at home ready to be discussed during registration each morning.
Home reading is to be completed each night after school with a suitable comment added to pupil Reading Records to show the development of pupil comprehension skills.
Our Learning
In Maths we will be looking at how to apply operations and knowledge from previous year groups in new and expanded ways.
In English we will be working towards extending pupil’s writing styles and their critical understanding of a variety of text types.
Our first Science topic this year is Categorising animals and other forms of life, but we will also cover a variety of topics later in the year such as Light and Evolution.
We are beginning our History with a topic on the Golden Age of Islam which will include a visit to the Oriental Museum in Durham!
Geography will be focussed on The Water Cycle in term 1, with a new focus on map reading skills in the new year.
Microscope Investigation
Year 6 have spent an engaging afternoon using microscopes on loan from the Royal Microscopical Society.
Pupils had to find the culprit of a robbery at a Jelly Baby factory through close observation of several clues! I’m happy to say the culprit was identified thanks to the scientific skills demonstrated by Year 6!
British Science Week 2018 – Eggstronauts!
Year 6 had a go at being engineers for the afternoon, building capsules that could protect their astronauts (eggs!) from hitting the floor!
Trips and Visits
Year 6 trip to the Oriental Museum
Year 6 had a fantastic time at the Durham Oriental Museum, engaging in a range of activities which tie into our current work in History and RE.
Year 6 Safety Carousel Trip
Year 6 had a very interesting day at the Safety Carousel, learning about different types of safety issues and even having a go at being detectives!
