Welcome to Year 5
Year 5 is a very exciting year. We work extremely hard and enjoy lots of challenges.
The class teacher is Mr Dhiman, who joined the school in January 2018. Mrs Harvey helps the class to learn in Year 5 on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings and Miss Button is a student teacher who is completing her final placement with us.
Our Curriculum
Our topics this year will include:
- The Anglo Saxons
- World War 2 in Durham and further afield
- The Amazon and rain forest geography
- Rio de Janeiro – human and physical geography
- Animals including humans
- Properties and changes of materials
- Earth and space
- Forces and magnetism
- Living things and their habitats

Class newsletters have been sent home with your child. Please take the time to read it. A link will appear here shortly.
Homework
This will help you know when different homework is given out and when it is collected in.
Spellings are given to the class on Mondays to learn every day, ready for a test on Fridays.
Homework grids are given to children in the first week of a term. children can choose from a range of tasks which are weighted differently. For simpler, less involved tasks they will earn 1 merit point and for the most involved they can earn 4 merit points. The expectation is that they produce one piece every week and hand it in on the Thursday of that week.

Autumn Term
Road Safety Workshop with the CO-OP
Year 5 really enjoyed a road safety workshop this week and learned a great deal about staying safe around lorries and the meaning of different road signs. They also LOVED sitting in the lorry!
The Anglo Saxons
The class went on a trip to Palace Green Library to learn all about the Anglo-Saxons. This included finding out about the life of a monk, the clothing Anglo Saxons wore and investigating a range of artifacts.
We have been looking at the design of Anglo Saxon pendants and have really enjoyed designing, making, painting and decorating our own. It really helped us understand the high level of skill required to make such beautiful items.
Summer Term
Trips and Visits
As part of our learning about Durham’s contribution to WW2, we will be visiting the Beamish Museum on the 11th May 2018 to take part in an Evacuee workshop. Check back here soon to see pictures and some of the children’s work relating to our visit.
We welcomed Dawn Layland from the Durham Records Office into school on the 18th May 2018 who worked with the children to give them experience of looking at artefacts and archive records to piece together information about an evacuee from Sunderland, who came to live in the countryside in County Durham during WW2.
