Welcome to Year 5
In Year 5 we are a class of 25 children who are all enthusiastic and ready to learn! Our class teacher is Mr Johnston-McKee and we are supported by Miss Hall.
Curriculum & Learning
We have a topic based approach to the curriculum, meaning that each half term we will have an overarching title/theme. As many of our subjects as possible will link to this theme so that we can develop a deep understanding of our topic and explore as many aspects as possible.
The links below will give you more information about each half term’s topic:

Our Topic Work
Summer 1 – Our World War One
Our Topic-based learning this half term will focus primarily on the local impact of WW1. We will be investigating local soldiers from Ushaw Moor and Durham, broader ways the war affected the local community as well as the wider aspects of the conflict.
Throughout this half term we will use a range of poetry and non-fiction resources to support our understanding of WW1. These include “Who’s for the game?” by Jessie Pope, “Dulce et Decorum est” by Wilfred Owen and a variety of primary resources. Below is the English planning for Year 5.

- Autumn 2 English MTP

Our maths learning will be split up into blocks over the course of the year. Within these blocks, we will focus on a range of objectives and develop the key skills of fluency, problem solving and reasoning. Below is the Year 5 medium term planning for Maths.
Each half term, children will be given a homework grid with a range of activities to choose from, with many of them linking to our topic. Each activity will be worth up to a certain number of merits. Homework is due on a Thursday when the children will have an opportunity to share it with the rest of the class.

Children will also be given a set of spellings and times tables to practise at home for our weekly test in school. It is expected that children read three times a week at home with an adult, this can be recorded in their reading diaries.
A class newsletter will be sent home half termly. These will provide an overview of our topic and the specific subjects linked to it, as well as providing information about upcoming events.
