Year 5

Welcome to Year 5

We are a class of 30 children who are all enthusiastic and ready to learn! Our class teachers are Mr Dhiman and Mr Greenfield, supported by Mrs Johnson and Mr Crawley.

Our Curriculum & Learning

In Year 5, we focus on a different topic each half term. This topic will create an overarching theme to our learning in other subjects. We will begin each topic with a ‘hook’ lesson to trigger our imaginations and leave us ready to learn more! Topic work allows the children to make links between subjects and gain a deeper understanding.

English

Our English work is taught using a class novel. We read a different novel every half term and our English work links to the novel where possible. Our novels are often inspired by our topic work to allow links to be made during lessons.

We share our novel during story time and this gives us the opportunity to simply enjoy listening to a story which we then discuss the next day.

Our comprehension and writing tasks link to our novels and we complete a range of writing genre in our lessons. Our reading lessons focus on the development of skills linked to film clips, novel extracts, images and to help us with this we use Reading VIPERS (Vocabulary, Inference, Prediction, Explanation, Retrieval and Summarising).

Maths

Our Maths focuses on the skills developed through White Rose Maths. We follow the block planning schedule and differentiate the lessons to meet the needs of the children. We use a variety of White Rose teaching methods throughout our lessons.

Over the course of the year, we will be developing our knowledge and understanding of fluency, reasoning and problem solving. Our learning focuses on vocabulary as well as concrete, pictorial and abstract skills to develop the understanding required for each block of work.

Our Topic Work

Spring Term

Marvellous Mayans!

We begin the New Year by exploring our topic ‘Marvellous Mayans!’. The children will learn about how the the Maya were discovered by European explorers and learn about many aspects of their civilisation (houses, clothing, beliefs and their Gods, what they ate). Where possible we will link this across subjects. The children will be reading a novel linked to the theme of the Maya and using this to inspire our reading and writing lessons. Our Science learning will focus on investigating Forces and explore gravity, friction, air resistance, water resistance and develop an understanding of balanced forces. In our creativity lessons we will be making Maya-inspired masks out of recycled milk bottles! (More details can be found in the Class Newsletter and Topic Web by clicking on the links on this page).

Homework

Each term we send out challenge grids for homework. The children will be given a grid of suggested tasks which they are expected to complete – (at least) one per week. Homework will be shared on the Class Dojo pages and children are asked to upload their work to Class Dojo by the Thursday of each week. The tasks completed are worth different amounts of Monster Points which will be rewarded in class. To see our current homework grid please click the link below.
