Welcome to Year 4
We are a hardworking and enthusiastic class of 24 pupils! Our class teacher is Mr Dhiman and we are supported by Miss Kelly on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday mornings. We are also taught by Mrs Harvey on Friday afternoons. P.E. is taught on Wednesday afternoons, so please make sure your child has the correct PE kit requirements in class.
Curriculum & Learning
Because of the enforced closure of the school due to the COVID-19 outbreak, parents may like to use some of the following links to help keep their children’s learning on track.
This has clips and resources which guide children through the strands of mathematics that we would have been moving on to.
This is a useful resource as it gives children loads of suggested opening lines to their stories. You could ask yur child to choose one and then write the opening to a story, then the middle, and finally the ending. Once completed they could illustrate their story with their own original artwork.
We have a topic based approach to the curriculum, meaning that each half term we will have an overarching title/theme. As many of our subjects as possible will link to this theme so that we can develop a deep understanding of our topic and explore as many aspects as possible.
The links below will give you more information about each half term’s topic:
- Autumn 1 – Roman Around
- Autumn 2 – Winter Wonderland
- Spring 1 – Bright Sparks!
- Spring 2 – The Great Outdoors
- Summer 1 – Sounds Amazing!
- Summer 2 – Mine Craft!
We will be developing our understanding of place value to begin the term and using this as a base for addition and subtraction. We aim to complete a variety of fluency, reasoning and problem solving tasks during each block of our work and the children enjoy the different challenges which these offer.

Our Topic Work
This half term, our topic will be mainly linked to Science and history. We will be focusing on Electricity and how inventions have changed our lives since the Industrial revolution.
Throughout the term, we will be using the book The Time Machine by H.G. Wells. We will be reading and discussing the characters and events in the book. We will be creating our own
Our Maths learning will be split up into blocks over the course of the year. Within these blocks, we will focus on a range of objectives and develop the key skills of fluency, problem solving and reasoning. Click on the link below for the Year 4 medium term planning for Maths.
The children are given spellings to learn from the statutory lists from the National Curriculum which they are tested on weekly.
Project based homework
Throughout the school, the children are given a project based homework task to complete each half term. The tasks will link directly to our topic work in class and allow the children more freedom of choice in their work. The children will be awarded merits for completing a variety of tasks and be given a chance to share their homework every week with the class. The children will still be expected to complete reading at home and develop their basic maths skills through learning their tables and basic number facts. Homework will be set at the start of a half term and the children are asked to return their completed work every Thursday to share with the class.
