Welcome to Year 4
We are a hardworking class who love being active and learning in many different ways. Our class teacher is Mr Dhiman. We are supported in class by Mrs Johnson and Miss Kelly.
Our Curriculum and Learning
In Year 4, we focus on a different topic each half term. This topic will create an overarching theme to our learning in other subjects. We begin each topic with an activity that sparks our interest and encourages us to ask questions so that we can direct our learning. This topic based approach allows the children to make links between different subjects and thus gain a deeper understanding overall.

Our English work is taught using a class novel. We enjoy reading our novel everyday during our daily story time. Story time gives us the chance to simply enjoy listening to and losing ourselves in a story which we then discuss the next day. By adopting this approach our recall skills are improved and our love of reading and stories is increased. You cann view the Medium Term Plan for English by clicking on the link below:-
Our class novels for this year are:-
Escape From Pompeii by Christina Balit
The Ice Palace by Robert Swindells
The Time Machine (abridged version) by H.G. Wells
Anglo-Saxon Boy by Tony Bradman
Folk Tales of North East England by Philip Atkinson
Canary in the Coal Mine by Madelyn Rosenberg
Our comprehension and writing tasks link to our novels and we complete a range of writing genre in our lessons. Our reading lessons also focus on developing our skills linked to our film clips, images and we use Reading VIPERS to help us with this.
As we begin Year 4, we will be taking time to recap on our learning from Year 3 as well as developing our understanding of the topics we missed in the summer term. We predominantly follow the White Rose Maths Scheme of Work which puts an emphasis on children working with concrete resources first, before moving on to pictorial and then abstract representations. This helps them to understand the “why” in Maths concepts.
Over the course of the year, we will be developing our knowledge and understanding of fluency, reasoning and problem solving. Our learning will be divided in to blocks to allow the children to gain a secure understanding of the key skills and vocabulary needed to progress.
