Welcome to Year 3

We are a hardworking and vibrant Year 3 class. Our class teacher is Miss Jones and we are supported in class by Miss Hall.

Our Curriculum and Learning

In Year 3, we focus on a different topic each half term. This topic will create an overarching theme to our learning in other subjects. We will begin each topic with a ‘hook’ lesson to trigger our imaginations and leave us ready to learn more! Topic work allows the children to make links between subjects and gain a deeper understanding.

English

Our English work is taught using a class novel. We enjoy reading our novel every day during our daily story time. Story time gives us the chance to simply enjoy listening to a story which we then discuss.

This half term, we will be enjoying the following texts as a class:

Mark of the Cyclops: An Ancient Greek Mystery by Saviour Pirotta

The Orchard Book of Greek Myths by Geraldine McCaughrean and Emma Chichester Clark

Our comprehension and writing tasks link to our key texts and we complete a range of writing genres in our lessons. Our reading lessons also focus on developing our skills through the use of film clips, images and we use Reading VIPERS to help us with this too.

Maths

Over the course of the year, we will be developing our knowledge and understanding of fluency, reasoning and problem solving. Our learning will be divided in to blocks to allow the children to gain a secure understanding of the key skills and vocabulary needed to progress.

Our Topic Work

Summer 2 – It’s All Greek to Me!

In our history work, we will be studying Ancient Greece. Why did the Ancient Greeks build a big wooden horse? What are the Ancient Greek myths all about? How did the Olympics come about? And what did the Ancient Greeks believe in? We will answer all of these questions and more, both in our history lessons and across the curriculum.

Homework

Each half term, children will be given a homework grid with a range of activities to choose from, with many of them linking to our topic. Each activity will be worth up to a certain number of points on Class Dojo. Homework is due on a Thursday when the children will have an opportunity to share it with the rest of the class.
