Welcome to Year 3
We are a hardworking and vibrant Year 3 class. Our class teacher is Miss Jones and we are supported in class by Miss Hall.
Our Curriculum and Learning
In Year 3, we focus on a different topic each half term. This topic will create an overarching theme to our learning in other subjects. We will begin each topic with a ‘hook’ lesson to trigger our imaginations and leave us ready to learn more! Topic work allows the children to make links between subjects and gain a deeper understanding.

Our English work is taught using a class novel. We enjoy reading our novel every day during our daily story time. Story time gives us the chance to simply enjoy listening to a story which we then discuss.
This half term, we will be enjoying the following texts as a class:
The Firework-Maker’s Daughter by Philip Pullman
The Iron Man by Ted Hughes
Our comprehension and writing tasks link to our key texts and we complete a range of writing genre in our lessons. Our reading lessons also focus on developing our skills linked to our film clips, images and we use Reading VIPERS to help us with this.

- Year 3 English Medium Term Planning Spring 2
- Year 3 English Medium Term Planning Summer 1
Over the course of the year, we will be developing our knowledge and understanding of fluency, reasoning and problem solving. Our learning will be divided in to blocks to allow the children to gain a secure understanding of the key skills and vocabulary needed to progress.
Our Topic Work
Summer 1 – Use the force!
In our science work this half term, we will be learning all about forces and magnets. First, we will be thinking about the question, “What materials do magnets work on?” and we will continue to explore the fascinating world of forces throughout the summer term. In our history work, we will be studying Ancient Egypt. How different was Ancient Egypt from today? Who was Tutankhamun? What are hieroglyphs? And what did the ancient Egyptians believe in? We will answer all of these questions and more in our history lessons. Oh – and do keep an eye out for these fantastic activity books coming home. We have purchased one for each of the Year 3 pupils to complete, enjoy and keep.
Each half term, children will be given a homework grid with a range of activities to choose from, with many of them linking to our topic. Each activity will be worth up to a certain number of points on Class Dojo. Homework is due on a Thursday when the children will have an opportunity to share it with the rest of the class.
Our class newsletters are sent home via email every half term and shared on our closed class Facebook page. The newsletter will share important information about what we are learning in class and share any upcoming events.
