Welcome to Year 2
Welcome to Year 2! We are a class of 22 enthusiastic children with an eagerness to learn. Our class teacher is Mrs Cooper and Mrs Harvey works with us every morning and teaches us Computing and P.E. every Friday afternoon.
Our new curriculum is topic based and ensures a broad and balanced approach to teaching The National Curriculum. Children are able to make links and build on previous learning. Each half term the topic will change and link together a range of subjects with a common theme. Topic work allows the children to gain a deeper understanding of the focus theme and allows them to transfer skills learnt in both Literacy and Numeracy.

This year our English lessons will be linked to a half termly class novel, which will also share a thematic link with our overarching topic. We will develop reading comprehension and writing skills through the exploration of our class novels and through related texts linked with our topic.
This year children will be developing key skills of fluency, reasoning and problem solving in Maths. We begin by extending our understanding of place value understanding different representations. Then we will be focusing on the four operations.
We have project based homework. The children are given a grid with various activities to complete which are worth a different amount of merits. The children are given the opportunity to share their homework with the class on a weekly basis. Our grids link to the topic we are learning about in class.
The children are given weekly spellings on a Monday which are tested on a Friday. They will either be practising a phonic pattern or learning how to spell high frequency/ exception words from the Year 1/2 list.
Our class newsletters are sent out every half term. They explain what the children will be learning about in the different lessons and share any upcoming events or trips.
Please make sure children have a water bottle in school everyday. They also need their reading book and reading record as we have an Accelerated Reading Session everyday in addition to guided reading lessons.
Children need a P.E kit in school and it usually best left in school.
