Summer Term
Today we visited Souter Lighthouse as part of our Literacy and Topic work. We had a great day and we made wonderful lighthouses!
Animal Science
This week four of our Year 1 and Year 2 children were lucky to be chosen to visit Esh Winning Primary School to take part in an Animal Science day.
They were all very brave!
This week we have been learning to tell the time. We have been looking at o’clock, half past, quarter to and quarter past.
Shapes
We have also been looking at shape. We made different 2-D shapes using our bodies.
Salad
We tried a range of salad ingredients. Then we designed and made our own salads. We really enjoyed them!
Spring Term
We read the African story of ‘The Leopard’s Drum’ as a starting point for some of our work to begin the half term. We retold the story, located Africa on the globe and learned it was one of the seven continents. Can you name the other six continents? Then we used inflatable globes and atlases to find Kenya and look for some main features, like Mount Kenya and the capital city Nairobi.
Finding Kenya
In Science we have looked at some habitats in the UK and compared them with habitats in Kenya. We found that in Kenya there are forests, deserts, mountains and the savanna. Now we are using non- fiction texts and websites to find out more about some of the large animals found in the savanna. We will use them to write some fact files.
We have also been making food chains to show how the living things in a habitat all need each other to survive.
We have also made collages of some African animals, listened to and played djembe drums, looked at some paintings by a Kenyan artist and watched a film clip about rhythms and African drumming.
We were able to share everything we’ve done so far with parents, teachers and friends in our class assembly.
Our Class Assembly – Speak Out!
Kelly from the NSPCC came to tell us how important it is to speak out if we are worried or unhappy about something. She did a special assembly with us.
Maths
We have been practising some written methods to add numbers together. We used our empty number line to play the ‘Rocket Race’ game with a friend.
Mrs Claus
Mrs. Claus visited Y2 to tell us a story.
We also got the chance to ask her some questions about Santa, reindeer, elves and the North Pole.
Geography
Geography in traditional tales:
- We thought about the geographical features.
- We made a river, fields, trees and a bridge.

Science
In Science we have been exploring materials:
- We identified and named materials.
- We added our labels to objects around the room.
- We found, paper, metal, plastic, wood and glass
Maths
We play number games in Maths to apply and consolidate our number skills.
River Cruise
Look at all the geographical features we spotted on our river cruise.
Walk through Durham City
We walked through Durham City and over some of the bridges on our way back to the bus.

Visit to University Botanic Gardens
We visited the University Botanic Gardens to find out about habitats and marvellous minibeasts. We looked at some fossils of plants from millions of years ago. The ‘Millennium Bug’ sculpture is modelled on different minibeast parts. Can you see which ones?
We looked in dark, damp places for some minibeasts. We found a surprise too! Ross and Paddy showed us some of the places where minibeasts like to live. They gave us the challenge to build minibeast hotels with leaves, twigs and sticks to provide a habitat for the minibeasts in the woodland.
Inside the greenhouse were some minibeasts. We were allowed to hold the stick insect if we wanted to.
The other minibeasts stayed safely behind glass!
We even got to feed the fish!
