Welcome to year one’s class page. The children in year one are five and six years old. We have twenty-four children in year one this year, six girls and eighteen boys. All of the children are working hard to develop their independence and learn new things with some help from Mr Brayson and Mrs Johnson. You can see some of the wonderful learning experiences that occur in year one on this page.
Below are the topics we will be covering in year one:
Autumn 1: All about me
Autumn 2: Toys
Spring 1: Great Fire of London
Spring 2: Katie Morag’s Adventures
Summer 1: Pirates
Summer 2: Exporers
Homework in Year 1
Homework is given out at the start of every half term as a grid. The children can choose which ever piece of homework they would like off that grid to bring in each Thursday. Currently the homework is linked to Pirates but has previoulsy been linked to the U.K and to the Great Fire of London.
This term we have been looking at 2D and 3D shapes. As part of this, to show the children’s understanding, we created 2D and 3D shapes with marshmallows. The children really enjoyed this exercise but didn’t enjoy how sticky their hands became after.
To kick start our Pirates Topic the children designed and created their own Jolly Rogers. The all enjoyed the task and created some wonderful designs.
Great Fire of London
During this half term we have been learning about the Great Fire of London. This culminated in us recreating Pudding Lane in London using carboard boxes. We then, wi
th the help of our local fire bridgade, set fire to them and watched the flmaes spread. We linked this to why the fire spread so quickly in 1666. The children loved it and also got a very informative fire safety talk off the Firemen.
Year one took part in a Yoga session this week. They thoroughly enjoyed learning the poses and most were able to apply them in a story during the session.
The Doctor’s Surgery
During the next few weeks, year one will be learning about the human body. In order to enhance the children’s learning, our role play area is a doctor’s surgery. The children have enjoyed acting as a doctor, nurse, patient or receptionist.
Maths is everywhere!
We went on a walk around our school to find numbers, shapes and anything else relating to maths.
Computing in Year One
As part of our Computing lessons we have been investigating simple algorithms using bee-bots. We were working in small groups to give the bee-bots simple instructions and controlling them from one picture to another.
We’re going on a Bear Hunt
Year one have been reading the story ‘We’re Going on a Bear Hunt’. We decided to go on our very own Bear Hunt around the school. We tip- toed through the school, crawled past Mrs Maughan’s office, wiggled past nursery and jumped on the stepping stones!
Writing with Chalk
We were all writing our name, words and sentences on the yard with chalk. We were also practising our curly caterpillar letters.
Mark Making in Shaving Foam
Year one thoroughly enjoyed writing their name in the shaving foam this week.
Trips and Visits
Tuesday 10th October 2017
Year one and year two visited Durham Johnston School to meet Tim Hopgood. Tim spoke about what it is like to be an author and an illustrator. We listened to him read his books ‘The Owl Who Said Wow’ and ‘Singing in the Rain’. We also learnt how he draws his illustrations.
