Welcome to Year 1!
We are an energetic class of 20 children ready for our Year 1 challenge! Our class teacher is Miss Lamb. We are supported every morning by Mrs Burnside and some afternoons by Miss Kelly. Mrs Burnside also teaches us Forest School. We are lucky this year that we have an outdoor area where we are hoping to do more outdoor learning!
Our Curriculum & Learning
Our curriculum this year will be topic based which means each half term we will focus on a new topic. This will allow us to spend more time deepening our understanding of that particular topic through most subjects within the National Curriculum. In order to help us transition to Year 2, we will focus on developing our skills of reading, writing and mathematics across the subjects. Click the links below to find out which topics we will be covering throughout the year!
In maths, we will build upon the skills we learned in reception to help us develop our fluency, reasoning and problem solving skills. Throughout the year, we will use concrete, pictorial and abstract methods to help our support our learning and understanding.
Throughout the year, we will be reading books which directly link to our class topics. We will then use these books as a base for our English lessons to help with writing. Our English lessons will also develop our reading and comprehension skills.
Each half term a new newsletter will be emailed home. These have important information on regarding the class and an overview of the topic for that half term.
We have changed the homework this year for Year 1. Children will have two homework books. One for Maths and one for Phonics. These will be alternated each week for children to complete their homework in and then return to school every Thursday. Children will be awarded with merit points for completing their homework.
As well as homework books, children are encourage to read at least three times per week at home to help develop their fluency in reading.
Children also have weekly spellings and will get 6 weeks worth of spellings sent home at the beginning of each half term. They will be tested on these spellings every Friday.
