21 January 2008 - Poetry Event featuring Potty Poet Gez Walsh

Potty Poet, Gez Walsh visited our school as part of a poetry workshop. He inspired us to write brilliant poems.

The aim of  the  poetry workshop was to plan an event for the new year which would inspire the children in our cluster of schools to enjoy and write poems with improved skill and passion. We also wanted to encourage some children to be performance poets to a comfortable sized audience.

The event began on 18th January with a "cold " poetry writing task in which children wrote a poem entirely without help first thing in the morning. The children were then asked to explain how they felt when they were asked to do this.

The following Monday, 24th January, Gez Walsh visited our school and gave an inspiring and hilarious performance of some of his poetry which was enjoyed by children from other schools in our area as well. Much to the amusement of the children some members of staff were made to perform various poems and dances.

The Spot on My Bum- by Gez Walsh

Good grief! This spot on my bum,

I´ve squeezed it so much that my cheeks

Have gone numb.

I´ts big and it´s red,

With a big yellow top,

I´ve squeezed it with pliers,

But still it won´t pop!

I´ve soaked it in water,

I´ve put on some cream.

Mum had a squeeze,

Which just made me scream.

I can´t sit down now,

The pain is dire,

My spot is glowing,

And my bum is on fire!

I cried to my mum

"Just one last try, please"

So mum, with a grip like Superman,

Started to squeeze.

Yes, mum had a hold of my spot,

With a vice- like grip.

My eyes they were popping

And I was biting my lip.

My body started shaking without restraint,

My legs they wobbled,

I started to faint.

Then my mum cried out with such distaste,

Because my spot, like a time-bomb,

Had exploded in her face!
